PORK EMPANADA
1. What do you think happened just before story started?
- As I've read the first paragraph in the story, I noticed that it's all about the young boy who experienced difficulties in life at his young age and I can sense that this young boy did his best to make a better life.
2. Important events in the story
"Bototoy was content even if sometimes he didn’t get even five centavos for watching someone’s car, or was ignored or even yelled at by the owner of the vehicle"
- I can see that the young boy doing his best to gain money in a good way even if some of them yelled at him. Most of the children today are very sensitive, but Bototoy is different, he's very brave.
"Bototoy and the youngest child, Nining, aren’t going to school yet because even if the tuition is free, getting their school supplies and other needs is a problem."
- There are a lot of children who's lazy enough to study even if they have money, but in case of Bototoy and his little sister, they are unfortunate to have an education because of poverty but still Bototoy did not complain, instead he make his own money.
"No matter how little he’d earned from watching cars, he would buy his sister some small present"
- in this scene I am very touched of what kind of kuya he was with his sister, he really love his sister so much and we can't deny their bonds as a siblings.
"After their dinner of swamp cabbage and fish sauce, Bototoy and Nining help their mother fold the laundry"
- Bototoy and Nining were a good children, helping to their mother even just a small task can help their mother doing the household task and lessen the work.
"“What will you bring me tomorrow, Kuya?” Nining always asks. “I won’t say, it’s a surprise,” Bototoy always answers.
- He did his best to create a good memories with his sister, he make his own money even if it's very hard but he still did it just so surprise his sister. They are very blessed and contented to what they have.
"Bototoy told himself: “If I get rich, I’m going to eat that.”
- even if he's still young, he really have a big dreams. It's not too late to make a wish and make it come true by doing your best to get it.
"For the first time in his young life, Bototoy thought of saving his money and living on a budget."
- it is the best way to practice a child so that when the time comes, he can make a good decisions in life and become wiser in handling money.
"That night, before he fell asleep, he imagined a sweet life without fear and without the ache of tired muscles and without illness and without the lack of money and without problems, and on the movie screen of his consciousness he was with Nining, and they were joking with each other, and they were riding a small car (because it was a child’s imagination), and they parked in front of Frankie’s, and they ordered meat pies and Cokes, and they ate inside the car."
- I can imagine in this scene that Bototoy really have a positive aspects of life. He knew that he will be a successful person someday and taste a good life and do the things he wanted to do someday. He's a dreamer and a hardworking person at the same time with a lot of dreams in life.
"This is where I work,” Bototoy said proudly, and Nining observed their surroundings with awe."
- He's very proud in his work, it did not contains a big value of money but it's a clean way to find money legally.
“Eat the crust, Nining, cause it’s crispy,” Bototoy told her. “It’s delicious, Kuya.”
- In this scene we realize that most of us work hard just to taste a good life that everyone experienced.
3. Think of an important event in the story. How would the story have changed if this event had not happened?
- If the waitress was not being careless and found the two meat pies fell into her hand that was till wrapped in waxed paper, but already going stale, she shouldn't give it to the two children because it can harm to their health.
4. List three facts about Pork Empanada. Then list three opinions about it.
A. Best story - it gives a best story about the bonds of the two siblings and how they treat to each other.
B. Gives a lesson to the reader - Don't give up and don't ever stop. Building yourself, though it is exhausting is more rewarding than the regret of not doing so, especially when you realized that you're not as strong as you once were, or as capable as you once were.
C. Value of life - Life on earth is very precious even if you are poor, just work hard because the goal is not to get anyone's validation but to become the best version of yourself.
5. What is the main conflict that the main character in the story must face?
- Poverty, as we can see that the two children did not able to have an education because of lacking of school materials and they don't have enough money to buy it. Even some food they can't but that's why the young boy make his own money by watching a car while the owner give some money to him.
6. In what way did Tony Perez create a mimesis of the real life? How did he portray life as it is?
- He create a mimesis of the real life by portraying a life of a poor child. Even if you are poor in many things, it is still possible to be happy with your life if you are thankful enough to your family. Attaining positive mentality and knowing your goals, that is necessary for a contented life beyond the reach of some folks who only believe in material things. Tony Perez knew that a mentality of wealth was just as good as wealth itself. When someone calls you poor always realize it is by their standard and doesn’t have to be yours.
7. Discuss the theme that Tony Perez used in this story. What makes this theme appealing to the reader?
- The young boy Bototoy sees the faces of people eating the pork empanada, he think it must be the most delicious food in the world. He wanted to buy empanada for his sister. He swears that, with the trickle of coins he gets from watching of cars, with enough money, he can buy two of the pork buns which is one is for his sister and one for him. It shows how contented and happy they are in a small things.
