Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓 Hotaru no Haka) is a 1967 semi-autobiographical short story by Japanese author Akiyuki Nosaka. It is based on his experiences before, during, and after the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. One of his sisters died as the result of a sickness, his adoptive father died during the firebombing proper, and his younger adoptive sister Keiko died of malnutrition in Fukui. It was written as a personal apology to Keiko, regarding her death. This heartbreaking picture was taken after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. It shows a young Japanese boy standing at attention, carrying the body of his baby sister who had been killed in the bombing. Makeshift crematoriums had been set up outside the city and this young boy had walked a long distance so that his sister could be cremated. This diary entry from the photographer, Joe O'Donnell, explained the photo. Grave of the Fireflies Japanese live action poster (2008)
Essay about the story and how I dealt with things going on with my life today.
When
I first read the story and watched the movie, I cried a lot. I watched
it many times but still I burst into tears, it makes my heart broken.
This true story shows us how short and painful a real life can be,
that's why we need to treasure every minutes in our lives and give love
to everyone aroud you as much as you can. Never let go the people whom
you've spend your precious time because our life can be too short.
This
story made me realize how blessed we are with our lives compare to the
boy(Seita) he was just a teenager but I can see his hardship. His mother
died due to the wound caused by the flames ignited by hate of people.
His father was a navy and never found since the war. His only hope in
life was his only sister Setsuko. War is evil and everyone will be
affected and suffer tirrebly. Some of us express our anger directly to
others without thinking the consequences. Control your pride, if the boy
swallowed his pride towards his aunt and went back for help he might
not feel the bitterness of life, they would have been fed. When it comes
to difficult times, it's better to swallow our pride than ruin
everything. Our pride can be very dangerous to others and especially to
ourselves if we let it consume us.
Help others when in needs. In this story, the boy and his little sister
went to the orphanage but because of the war, everything was chaotic and
many people were wounded and died. It seemed like no one noticed the
children and no one extend their hand and they died. We must use our
heart with full of love with ears wide open and willing to listen and a
hand that is willing to help. Do not build a taller fences to others
when they needs help. This story makes you feel that life is different
and very challinging, in order to survive you must be ready.
There
are short and beautiful scene in this story, I can see that even in
their difficult times, Seita and his little sister Setsuko treasured and
experienced joy and wonder even if they're living in the cave with the
fireflies inside their mosquito net. What makes the film even more
powerful is because of the sense of forebonding that hangs over the two
siblings. I'm so blessed with my family because we are united and all of
my siblings are supportive, they understand each other. If I have my
own family in the future I would love them to follow us like the
relationship I have now with my siblings. The beauty of this story
emphasizes the value of life.
We may experience difficulties and sufferings in our lives but we should
make a way on how to deal with it. Treasure every minute with your love
ones because life is filled with unpredictable moments.
